More information about the video content bellow: 1. Joya de Ceren is an UNESCO World Heritage Site in El Salvador. This site is considered the “Pompeii of the Americas.” In 590 AD a nearby volcano, Loma Caldera, erupted and buried the village under 14 layers of ash. The villagers were apparently able to flee in time – no bodies have been found – although they left behind utensils, ceramics, furniture, and even half-eaten food in their haste to escape. 2. On July 14, 1969, Honduras and El Salvador went to war. The 100 hour war took 4000 to 6000 lives, 12,000 were wounded, and 50,000 people rendered homeless The cause was ostensibly the World Cup matches between Honduras and El Salvador qualifying for Mexico ’70. As a result of existing tensions being exacerbated by these matches, on 14 July 1969 the two countries began the 100-hour-long war known as the Football War. 3. The civil war in the country took place from 1980 to 1992. During the period, almost 75,000 lives were lost. Economic inequality was the reason for the war. The full-fledged civil war lasted for more than 12 years and saw extreme violence from both sides. It also included the deliberate terrorizing and targeting of civilians by death squads, the recruitment of child soldiers, and other violations of human rights, mostly by the military. 4. The country’s history begins with the 1st century BC, at the time Salvador was inhabited by tribes of the Maya. The ruins of Tazumal on the territory of the country, there are the ancient building structures of the Maya, which are considered important for the study of this period. 5. Izalco is a stratovolcano on the side of the Santa Ana Volcano. Izalco erupted almost continuously from 1770 (when it formed) to 1958 earning it the nickname of "Lighthouse of the Pacific", and experienced a flank eruption in 1966. Its brilliant flares were clearly visible for great distances at sea, and at night its glowing lava turned it into a brilliant luminous cone. 6. Before the Spanish conquest, the Pipil people established their capital, Cuzcatlan, near the current location of San Salvador. Not much is known about Cuzcatlan, as it was abandoned by its inhabitants in an effort to avoid Spanish rule. Gonzalo de Alvarado and Diego de Holguín occupied the empty settlement and began to develop it. Since then the town changed location twice, in 1528 and 1545. 7. El Salvador lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, and is thus subject to significant tectonic activity, including frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. El Salvador is home to 22 volcanoes, but only 6 of them are considered active.
